» When We Were 5: Sonny Ganguly, CMO

As we continue our birthday month’s “When We Were 5” series, next up is WeddingWire Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Sonny Ganguly!

Learn more about Sonny’s favorite things when he was five, along with his reflections on WeddingWire’s growth over the past five years.

When you were five….

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Ever since I was 5, I wanted to be a pediatrician.  I went through school thinking I’d be a doctor and was even pre-med throughout college.  Then one day I had to let my parents down and tell them that I was going into the business world after graduation.  I wish I had figured it out sooner and skipped organic chemistry!

Who was your role model?

I think it was Optimus Prime from the Transformers.  He was quite an inspirational leader of the Autobots!

What was your favorite food?

I had an obsession with Snickers candy bars.  The only problem is that I called them ‘Sneakers.’  No 5 year old should be eating sneakers!

Now that WeddingWire is five…

Who has had the biggest impact in your success thus far?

The award would have to go to my mom.  She had a very successful career and always showed me that hard work pays off.  She has a unique ability to be extremely supportive, while also constantly pushing me to aim higher. It is a quality that I admire.  An honorable mention would have to go to my first boss at Kraft Foods over a decade ago who taught me to never settle for good enough, to always think about the consumer and to constantly innovate.

What has been your favorite moment so far at WeddingWire?

There are many to choose from, but I’d have to go with the first time one of my friends used WeddingWire to plan their wedding.  I received a link to their wedding website and was excited it had been done through our site.  Even better, on the wedding day they mentioned that they found most of their vendors through WeddingWire’s listing and reviews.  It was great to see an impact amongst my own friends!

What do you look forward to most in the next five years?

I like to say that the last 5 years have been the social media revolution, and that the next 5 will be the mobile revolution.  Technology is changing at a pace we have never seen before and much of the world will be powered by newer, more powerful mobile devices.  I look forward to all the advances we will make in the next 5 years, from cloud computing to augmented reality, which will make it easier for people to plan weddings and events.  Furthermore, we are excited about leveraging technology to make it simpler for our wedding professionals to manage and market their businesses.  We pride ourselves on being the leading technology company in the industry and I look forward to bringing the latest trends to our customers.

When you were five….

What did you want to be when you grew up?

An Astronaut.

Who was your role model?

My grandfather was my role model.

What was your favorite food?

Homegrown sugarcane (yum!)

Now that WeddingWire is five…

Who has had the biggest impact in your success thus far?

The founding partners of CourseInfo LLC (later Blackboard Inc.); a group of really smart guys who journeyed as entrepreneurs together.

What has been your favorite moment so far at WeddingWire?

My favorite moment was having lunch with Martha Stewart and having her call me out for using dessert plates instead of entrée plates… I should have responded that I was using “portion control!”

What do you look forward to most in the next five years?

I look forward to being able to continue to innovate in the mission to help our local businesses grow their businesses.
