» Latest News for LGBT-Friendly Wedding Pros: President Obama Embraces Same-Sex Marriage

It’s highly unlikely you missed it. But, in case you did, heads up:

On May 9, the President of the United States told ABC News’ Robin Roberts that he openly embraces same-sex marriage.

I was personally quite moved by the news, and, professionally, I was thrilled. Since my straight mom founded our company back in ‘99, it has often felt like we had to justify what we were doing or explain why acceptance in the mainstream market matters. Gays and lesbians often find themselves willing to accept crumbs just because the buffet feels so, so far away. So, every little bit has mattered.

Take, for example, advancing state-by-state legislation, increasing acceptance in the marketplace (read a recent summary of the landscape on this Pro Blog), and routine headlines about marriage equality. Every little bit of acknowledgment and acceptance has made a difference and same-sex couples (long-term and recently engaged) are headed to City Hall or other spiritual locations to tie the knot and celebrate their life-long commitments.

But, this month, President Obama offered up a game-changer. He didn’t introduce legislation or sign a bill. He didn’t point to someone in the gallery during the State of the Union. He didn’t split hairs about the difference between Civil Unions and legal marriage.

Instead, he talked from his heart about his thoughts on same-sex marriage and the couples he knows personally. He talked about his daughters and his wife, and conversations around their dinner table. Essentially, he found a rare moment to speak from his heart and shared with us that he thinks same-sex couples should be able to marry legally.

Those of who you are vendors and have supported or have “evolved” to embrace same-sex couples and their weddings for similar reasons understand why this is so powerful. The stories from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community are as powerful as the declarations of support made by our straight allies.

We are all in this together and I believe that we will find nothing but progress when we let love guide the way.

Thanks to all of you — and to WeddingWire — for your support of same-sex couples! We, at GayWeddings.com, are always happy to answer your questions and field your concerns and otherwise help you spread the good word that you, too, are an ally to our community.
